Time 75 Minutes Mid Term Exam April 2009

Answer All the questions and assume any missing data you find it necessary to complete your answer

Question No. 1                                                                       5 Marks

Describe the design procedure of the flexible coupling for connecting a motor shaft to a pump shaft Draw a neat sketch to show the general layout of the flexible coupling

Question No. 2                                                                        10 Marks

3 –An Uni-directional 8 pads thrust bearing is required to support a load of 50 Kn. The Start up load is expected to be about 20 % of the total bearing load. The shaft diameter is to be 0.130 m and the bearing has to operate at max. Speed of 8500 r.p.m. The lubricant available to the bearing is a mineral oil grade 46 ( ISO VG 46) with viscosity index of 95 . The lubricant is supplied in the form of flooded feed with inlet temperature of 50 C o . Bearing misalignment is expected to be exist.


It is required to present a full design of that bearing. Draw a sketch to show the general layout and the configuration of the final design of the off –set pad thrust bearing .
